Publish Your Age

12 Nov 2022 - Michael H. Scott

I recently hit 40 journal articles for my academic career. You can see the list here.

Although 40 is a milestone for your real age, it’s meaningless for journal articles. Horns can toot at 100 articles, but not 40.

Anyway, I wondered if I will ever publish my real age, i.e., will the two lines below ever intersect?

Journal articles

Based on the data, I’ll get there around 50.

I’ve seen people half my Academic Age who have published more than twice their Real Age, e.g., 80 articles less than 10 years out from their Ph.D. That’s motivation for me to grow up and publish my age.

On second thought, maybe it’s not.

As a corollary, what is the relationship between academic age and h-index? Below is my h-index, according to Google Scholar, both with and without citations to OpenSees documentation, website, manuals, etc.

I work on problems related to modeling and nonlinear structural analysis. If these problems are relevant to a current professional project, feel free to reach out.
